Panoramic view from the terrace of the Almudena Cathedral

Share it

From the dome of the Cathedral, more than 70 meters high, we enjoy one of the best views of Madrid.

La Almudena has two great unknowns that deserve to be known: its crypt and the ascent to the dome.

The Museum

Going up to the Almudena terraces is part of the visit to the Cathedral museum where objects of religious and artistic value from the old parish of Santa María de la Almudena are exhibited.

The entrance to the museum is through the door of the Cathedral in front of the royal palace, in the Plaza de la Armería. You can make the visit with the audio guide or join one of the guided tours scheduled by the museum.

Almudena Cathedral and Royal Palace

Armory Square

We are fascinated by the mosaics of the Slovenian artist and priest Marko Ivan Rupnik that decorate the Chapter House and the Main Sacristy.

Also noteworthy are the spaces dedicated to the patron saints of Madrid: La Almudena and San Isidro Labrador. And as a curiosity we can see the model of the Cathedral as the architect Francisco de Cubas dreamed it, a project very different from the one that would finally be carried out.

The first viewpoint

After climbing some stairs we go out to a balcony from where we will have privileged views of the Plaza de la Armería, you will have from here the best view of the Royal Palace to see the Solemn Relay of the Guardon the first Wednesday of each month.

The Dome

We continue climbing and we reach the dome from where you will have a 360 degree panoramic view of Madrid. Walking around the outside of the dome you can see some iconic buildings of the city. If you look to the south and east you will see the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande, the Viaduct, the Emir Mohamed I park, the Telefonica building and the Teatro Real.

Views to the south

To the west the view will be lost in the green of the Casa de Campo and in the distance the mountains of Madrid, the Edificio España and the Torre de Madrid can be seen between the bell towers of the Cathedral on the north side. In each of the viewpoints you have panels that will help you to identify the most important buildings.
